What people are saying about The Painters Compass Color Wheel.

“I've been using the Painter's Compass Color Wheel as a teaching aid for nearly a year in my oil painting classes with great success. I found that it addresses the biggest issue facing many painters: being able to correctly neutralize a color. By plotting the paints from one's palette, you can quickly see where it it in terms of hue and saturation, thus quickly achieve the color you want to mix. My students found extremely helpful and color theory finally became accessible. The larger size is perfect for class demonstrations and the smaller ones fit nicely into gear bags.”

— Carol Buswell, fine artist and instructor at Loudon Street Studios

“The Painters Compass Color Wheel plays an essential part in my painting process.  It helps me mix the right colors.  I keep one taped to my easel, so it’s always there when I need it.”

“The process of mixing colors no longer feels like trial and error.  Rather, I feel more confident in mixing and matching any colors.”

— Quan Duong, fine artist and instructor at Thomas Wootton HS

“One of the more challenging aspects of painting is color mixing. The Painters Compass Color wheel developed by Glen Kessler is one of the most straightforward tools for understanding color. Free of complicated equations or diagrams, this color wheel is useful for sophisticated or simple paintings.”

“I was a studio art major in college and of course was taught and know the basics of color theory. That being said, I have to say in all my years of college and taking continuing education courses in painting, I have not had it presented to me the way the Painters Compass Color Wheel has with such ease. Hue, saturation and value are conveyed in such a straightforward manner that it makes it possible and quite simple for anyone to approach mixing color in a very precise way. It has been an invaluable tool for me to have on my painting journey and has genuinely set me up to succeed.”

Most of us think we know color theory. We learn our primary and secondary colors in grade school. Then we purchase one of many color wheels when we begin our art practice and we find ourselves utterly confused with far too many terms to learn and no real idea how to use it. Enter the Painter's Compass Color Wheel and a simple to follow instruction video and all becomes clear. By taking us back to the most basic three elements of color, using this tool helps us begin to internalize what is essential to know about using color. Having that knowledge in your head then frees the artist from fear and constant second guessing about how to mix the colors he or she sees...but keeping a Painter's Compass nearby is always a good idea to keep us "on track". Quite possibly the best investment I've made in all my art supply purchases!
