Our Story

A lifelong painter and graduate of Maryland Institute and New York Academy of Art, Glen Kessler started teaching at the collegiate level in 1998. In his decades of painting and teaching, one of the most challenging aspects of art making proved to be color theory. As a student no one had ever put it into a cohesive easy-to-understand system. Albers, Color Aid paper, endless color charts, artists’ favorite palettes...but no simple system. As a teacher he set out to do better…

Building on the work of Albert Munsell but adding in a functional aspect that any student could understand, Glen refined The Painters Compass Color Wheel over many years, hundreds of lectures, and thousands of students. It now serves as the blueprint for how to teach color theory and color mixing to the novice or the master.
